A single cracked or loose tile can usually be repaired or replaced on its own — full retiling is rarely necessary unless the cracking shows up across many tiles or the surface underneath has failed.
A tile that sounds hollow when tapped, or rocks slightly underfoot, has usually lost its bond to the substrate — that's a straightforward lift-and-refix or replace job. Cracking that runs in a line across several tiles, or reappears after a repair, points to movement in the slab or screed underneath, which is a different (and bigger) job to sort out properly. Grout failure is the most common cause of tiles going "loose" — water gets under the tile through failed grout lines long before the tile itself is damaged.
Tap each tile near the crack with something hard, like the handle of a screwdriver — a solid, sharp sound means it's still bonded, and a dull, hollow sound means it's lifted. If only the cracked tile sounds hollow, it's an isolated repair. If several tiles around it sound the same way, water has likely been getting in for a while and the grout and waterproofing membrane (in wet areas) are worth checking, not just the tile itself.
The honest catch with single-tile repairs: matching an old tile exactly can be difficult once that range is discontinued. A repair might leave a close-but-not-identical tile, or need a small feature swap to look intentional rather than patched.
A bathroom floor in Northcote had one cracked tile near the shower that the homeowner assumed was cosmetic. Tapping around it, three neighbouring tiles were also hollow — grout had failed along the shower edge and water had been tracking under the floor for some time. Re-grouting that whole edge and refixing four tiles solved it, well short of a full retile.
Usually not. A single cracked or loose tile is normally an isolated repair. Full retiling is only needed if cracking is widespread or the substrate underneath has genuinely failed.
We do our best, but older tile ranges are often discontinued. In that case a close match, or a small deliberate feature swap, is usually the most practical option.
