A well-prepped interior paint job should last 10 to 15 years in normal living areas, and closer to 5 to 8 years in high-traffic spots like hallways, kids' rooms and kitchens where walls get knocked and wiped down more often.
Prep work — sanding back old paint, filling holes and cracks properly, priming bare or patched areas — is what actually determines how long a paint job lasts, more than which paint brand goes on top. Skipping prep is the most common reason a job fails early: paint peeling or flaking within a year or two almost always traces back to painting over a surface that wasn't properly prepared.
On most homes this means filling nail holes and hairline cracks with the right filler (not just papering over them with a thick coat of paint), sanding glossy old paint so the new coat has something to grip, and spot-priming any patched or bare plaster so it doesn't absorb paint differently to the surrounding wall — that difference in absorption is what causes flat, uneven patches to show through months later, even after the paint has dried.
The honest version of this: cheaper paint applied properly over good prep will usually outlast expensive paint applied over walls that weren't prepped first. The prep is where the job is actually won or lost.
A hallway in a Preston home had been repainted three times in under five years, always with the same peeling problem in one corner. It turned out to be a slow damp patch from an external issue, not a paint problem at all — no amount of prep or paint brand would have fixed it until the damp was addressed first.
Almost always because the surface underneath wasn't properly prepped — painting over old glossy paint, unfilled cracks, or damp plaster all lead to early failure regardless of paint quality.
Only once the prep is right. A mid-range paint over good prep will outlast a premium paint applied over a poorly prepared wall.
