How Often Should You Clean Your Gutters in Melbourne?

Most homes need their gutters cleared twice a year — once in autumn after leaf drop, and once in spring before the fire danger period starts. Homes under large gum trees or near parks often need a third clean over summer as bark and leaf litter builds up.

Blocked gutters don't just overflow in heavy rain — sitting leaf litter holds moisture against the gutter metal, which speeds up rust, and a full downpipe can back water up under the roofline and into the eaves. The usual warning signs are water spilling over the edge during rain, plants or grass growing in the gutter, and sagging sections where the weight of wet debris has pulled the gutter away from its brackets.

What we actually check while we're up there

Clearing the debris is half the job — the other half is checking the brackets are still holding the gutter level, that downpipes aren't blocked further down, and that the gutter is still pitched correctly toward the outlets. A gutter that looks fine from the ground can be sitting flat or slightly backward-pitched in one section, which means it holds water instead of draining it, even after a clean.

Gutter guards help but don't remove the job entirely — fine debris, seed pods and moss still get through most mesh guards over time, so an occasional check is still worth doing even with guards fitted.

From the field

A home in Coburg with three large eucalypts had gutter guards fitted and hadn't been checked in two years on the assumption they'd be maintenance-free. We found a build-up of fine bark dust that had turned to compost under the mesh — enough to hold water and start rusting a whole side of guttering. A yearly check would have caught it early.

Typical price range
$360 minimum (4 hrs on site, $90/hr) for a gutter clean — plus materials if repairs are needed.

Common questions

Do gutter guards mean I never need a clean again?

No — they reduce how often, not eliminate it. Fine debris still gets through most mesh guards over several years and builds up underneath, out of sight.

Can a blocked gutter actually damage my home?

Yes. Overflow that runs down the fascia repeatedly can rot the timber behind it, and a backed-up downpipe can push water into the eaves or under the roofline — problems that cost far more than a clean would have.
